Love in a world at war

Behind the appearance of a science-fiction story set in a futuristic Spain colonised by aliens, three interwoven stories create a vision of youth and war in a theatrical kaleidoscope that transcends space and time. The play’s seven characters—two prisoners, three Spanish army soldiers and two members of a rebel militia—try to overcome impossible situations, and all find in love the only antidote to a world gone mad.

Invasión fue el primer texto que La Joven Company encargó expresamente a un autor contemporáneo. The original concept was to build an ensemble play with multiple stories, in the tradition of the acclaimed Marburg) about a new generation of young people who see war as something distant, more at home in video games than in reality.

This is the second play by Guillem Clua directed by José Luis Arellano, after he premiered La piel en llamas at the Centro Dramático Nacional the previous season. El propio director afirma que Invasión es un texto de gran exigencia: “this translates into almost exhausting work during rehearsals to achieve the level of commitment Guillem brings to his texts, but it is rewarded by the richness of the themes, the scale of the writing and the simplicity that emerges in the final result. Invasión could be any less. The text, described as “complejo, brutal and salvaje en muchos aspectos”, is almost an emotional slap: a game that pulls you towards an unexpected ending and makes you feel and experience freedom without hesitation, the force of first love, the irrepressible hope that helps us overcome any obstacle, the stubborn instinct for survival and, above all, the certainty that we must keep living whatever happens.
