Killer
One actor, three musicians and a defendant who embodies every character in his own story.
Sala Trono, Tarragona · Premiere: 16 September 2010
Is Pau Moira really a killer?
This play was Guillem Clua’s first venture into musical theatre. Although his experience as a lyricist is considerable, he had collaborated with composers such as Albert Guinovart, Joan Pérez and Toni Xuclà since 2003. With Killer, however, he wrote the entire libretto for an original work with music by Xavier Mestres.
Killer, a musical thriller for one actor and three musicians, tells the story of Pau Moira, a gravedigger who harbours a terrible secret… We meet Pau Moira as he sits in the dock. Everyone points to him as the deadliest serial killer who has ever existed, and some even call for the death penalty. But is Pau Moira really such a terrible character? What exactly is his relationship with all his victims? How can a woman love him so fiercely and defend his innocence? And, most importantly, how can a single actor tell this tragicomic story… as a musical?
The play is packed with dark humour, intrigue and surprises that constantly overturn the audience’s expectations, in an acting tour de force by its sole performer, who embodies every character: from Pau Moira himself to his girlfriend Jana, via a foul-tempered police officer and a waiter from Pamplona… Everything is orchestrated by Joan Maria Segura (Ruddigore o la estirpe maldita, La casa bajo la arena), with whom Clua is working on a show for the second time.
The musical has been translated into Spanish and English for its respective versions in Madrid and the United States. Cyprus and Greece have premiered the Greek version, with Pau Moira played by the popular actress Bessy Malfa. The author is currently working on the Spanish version for its premiere in Madrid.
