Debut play

Invisibles

Six characters move between reality and fantasy in a structure of simultaneous scenes shaped by deception, fear and an urban legend.

The play

An award-winning debut play

Guillem Clua’s debut play is built around a complex structure of simultaneous scenes and an urban legend that links the stories of six characters suffering from different psychological disorders. They move between reality and fantasy, life and death, hatred and terror, turning deception into a way of life that makes them invisible to society. Family secrets, corruption, drug trafficking and paranormal phenomena drive this fast-paced story, condemning its characters to an ironic and cruel fate.

Invisibles won the prestigious Ciutat d’Alcoi Theatre Prize in 2002 and, despite that recognition—and especially given that it was the author’s first play—it remains unpublished in professional theatre. It has, however, been staged by amateur companies in Barcelona on several occasions.

In this play, the author uses mental illness as a pretext to disrupt the classical narrative of stories that continually intertwine. It is the first time he experiments with one of the most recurring features of his work: simultaneous situations and the constant presence of all the actors on stage.

The prize jury highlighted that this is a serious play crafted to remain highly accessible, with everyday stories and a recognisable, practical language. Its complexity lies not in comprehension but in its surprising structure, with plot twists held back until the final second of the performance.
