‘Teatre Reunit’: an anthology of 14 texts now available
Arola Editors, one of the leading publishers of theatre texts in Catalan, has presented the new volume in the Teatre Reunit collection devoted to Guillem Clua’s work. The book gathers 14 of the author’s texts, from his debut Invisibles (2002) to Justícia (winner of the 2020 National Dramatic Literature Award). All the pieces have been published in Catalan, except two that appear in Spanish (Invasion and Ilíada), as they were originally written in that language. The volume also includes a prologue by Isaías Fanlo, offering a comprehensive overview of almost two decades of the author’s career from different perspectives, including the LGBTQI+ one.
In Fanlo’s words, “over almost two decades of intense work, Guillem Clua has forged a tenacious and eclectic theatrical career, marked by formal rigour and an unwavering commitment to addressing plots rooted in current conflicts and debates. His theatre is driven by a desire to provide audiences with the tools they need to remain informed and aware of the world around us. It is, we could say, a theatre that avoids Manichaeism, prejudices and closed messages, and embraces an ambiguity that encourages spectators to reach their own conclusions.”
The plays are published in chronological order of writing, which does not coincide with their order of premiere, since some pieces are still unpublished in Spain (Invisibles, Al damunt dels nostres cants, La tierra prometida) or were premiered many years after being written or published. The available texts are therefore: Invisibles, La pell en flames, Gust de cendra, Marburg, Killer, La terra promesa, Smiley: Una història d’amor, El somni de Lenin (an excerpt from La revolució no serà tuitejada), Invasión, 73 raons per deixar-te, Ilíada, L’oreneta, Al damunt dels nostres cants and Justícia.
Teatre Reunit is an initiative of the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya aimed at organising the creative corpus of the leading contemporary Catalan authors in a coherent way. Its collection includes such prominent names as Josep Maria Benet i Jornet, Lluïsa Cunillé, Josep Maria Miró and Marta Buchaca.
