An ambitious ‘Ilíada’ shakes Miami’s scene

An abandoned industrial warehouse welcomes audiences to the Miami production of Ilíada (USA). Conceived as a fiercely contemporary spectacle, it features fifteen actors on stage and, in the words of its director, Kevin Cass, “a young, different and bold staging”. Scaffolding and mobile staircases, light panels, live combats recreating the wars and striking costumes turn this stage version of a classic, never before presented in Florida, into an unforgettable experience.

The season begins with just four performances, on Mondays 7, 14, 21 and 28 October, at MMC Multimedia, a large venue usually devoted to filming major television formats such as Masterchef, La Voz and Project Runway Latin America. Further performances are already planned in Miami and other cities in the state. The multicultural cast consists of Julie Lafuente, Gianluca Mitrano, Luciano Cortés, Argenis Rea, Estefany Gomez, Andrés Forero, Omar Wahab, Valentina Alves, Andres Simonian, Facundo Garcia Flores, José Jimenez, Ángel Gomez, Óscar Escobar, Mercedes Garcia and Fernanda Bustamante.

Nine years after Helen was abducted by Paris, the Achaean army has managed to besiege Troy. The war seems to be nearing its end, but Achilles withdraws from battle after a dispute with King Agamemnon. This decision changes the course of the war and unleashes tragedy on both sides. Thus begins Ilíada, a foundational work of European culture that Guillem Clua originally adapted for the stage for La Joven Compañía. This is the text’s third international production, after the Mexican and Argentine versions.
